Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading Program

[Guest post by Angela Schneider, Programming & Adult Services Librarian]

It’s that time again! Time for the library’s Summer Reading Program for ages 3 and up. This year's theme is On Your Mark, Get Set--Read! The focus is on sports, health, and fitness--perfect for the upcoming Summer Olympics. Registration for this year’s program will begin Tuesday, May 31st. Stop by the library to sign up and pick up your materials.

Summer Reading Program isn’t just for kids and teens. Adults can get in on the fun, too! Participation is easy. Read two hours each week – books, audiobooks, e-books, magazines, or whatever format your like – and earn a grand prize entry slip for each week completed. Grand prizes this year include tickets to The Trout Museum of Art and Heritage Hill, passes to The Escape Room, a summer picnic set, creative coloring packs, and a variety of gift certificates! Visit the library each week to challenge yourself with the weekly trivia question for a chance to win additional prizes!

Need even more incentive to read this summer? Each hour you read will help raise money for Special Olympics. Vanderloop Shoes is our matching donor, so we will donate more money the more you read. The goal is to have kids, teens, and adults reach 25,000 hours of reading this summer which will earn $600 for Special Olympics. We need to reach 15,000 hours to give $200 and 20,000 hours to give $400. Let's go for the gold and reach that top mark for the highest donation!

The Summer Reading Program is designed to be fun, but it’s much, much more than that, too! The main reason to have a reading program at all is to prevent “summer reading loss.” Studies have shown that children who don’t read over the summer lose three months of reading comprehension. Be a model reader for the kids in your life and help them stay on track for next school year -- On Your Mark, Get Set… READ!

Fizz, Boom, READ!

Things are ramping up at the library as we prepare for an exciting summer of reading, programs, learning, and fun!

The library's 2014 Summer Reading Program has something for everyone with programs for ages 3 through adult, so be sure to sign up the entire family to read, learn, and play together this summer. Registration begins right after Memorial Day on Tuesday, May 27th. Sign up at the library and pick up your reading record to get started.

Science-related themes will guide the programs we have developed this summer:

  • "Fizz, Boom, READ!" for kids ages 3 through those entering grade 5
  • "Spark a Reaction" for teens entering grades 6 through 12
  • "Literary Elements" for adults

More information about the programs is available on the library's website, and a full list of scheduled events is included on our online calendar. From weird science to snakes to movie matinees, bubbles, bingo, animation and more, we have something for all interests and ages.

We put a lot of effort into the Summer Reading Program each year, because our mission is to inspire and support lifelong learning and the love of reading. This becomes especially important in the summer, as we hope to help families avoid "summer learning loss." Watch this brief video to learn more:

Help stop summer learning loss, sign up for the library's reading program, and enjoy the fun events we have scheduled for you. We look forward to seeing you at the library!

Community Support is Appreciated

Each year, as we prepare for the Summer Reading Program, we invite community businesses and civic groups to make a donation to support the program. The funds received help pay for the fabulous performers who fill our program days in the middle of each week, purchase books & grand prizes given as incentives for children who are reaching their weekly reading goals, and other expenses to support the costs of the program.

Without the support of the community, our Summer Reading Program would simply not be possible. Contributing organizations have our profuse thanks for continuing their support of reading, literacy, and lifelong learning. We're off to a good start this year with donations slowing accumulating. At the time of this writing, we have received contributions from the following agencies:

  • American Legion Jacob Coppus Post No. 258
  • BLC Community Bank
  • Kimberly Area Soccer Association
  • Kiwanis Club of Little Chute
  • TOPS WI 727 Kimberly
  • TOPS WI 875 Kimberly

In-kind donations have also been received from:

  • Kimberly Parks & Rec
  • The Learning Shop
  • Little Chute Parks & Rec
  • Village Limits Supper Club
  • Alexis Ludewig

THANK YOU!! to all of our supporters. We are grateful, and we look forward to another exciting summer!
