Position Description

 

TITLE:                                    Programming and Adult Services Librarian
REPORTS TO:                         Library Director
VILLAGE PAY GRADE:             Permanent Full-Time Wage Schedule

General Purpose:

Develop and manage adult library services:

  • Maintain a current and relevant collection of library materials.
  • Coordinate programming for adults.
  • Implement new technology for library users
  • Coordinate online presence for adult services.
  • Assist staff and customers with ready-reference, research questions, and how to use information tools.

Supervision Received:

Works under supervision of the library director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers ready-reference and research questions in person and through electronic communication.
  • Performs Readers’ Advisory duties, suggesting print and audiovisual materials for customers based on customers’ preferences.
  • Assists customers in using library resources such as books, computers and peripheral equipment, on-line catalogs, databases, the internet, Microsoft Office software, and other electronic resources.
  • Accesses resources via online catalogs, reserve systems, interlibrary loan systems, databases, the internet, and other electronic resources.
  • Maintains and enhances the library’s adult collections in all formats. Evaluates materials for purchase using selection and review sources as well as customer demand. 
  • Participates in the evaluation of new electronic resources.
  • Maintains budget in designated categories.
  • Participates in planning to address future customer information needs.
  • Researches, plans, formats, and produces book lists, newspaper articles, bibliographies, newsletters, brochures, and other reports and written materials.
  • Incorporates new technologies into library customer services and staff duties.  Trains library staff and teaches customers in the use of new hardware and software.
  • Plans, updates, and maintains adult services and programming on the library web site.
  • Organizes, promotes, and presents library tours, programs, and classes for adults.
  • Coordinates library displays and bulletin boards.
  • Participates in ordering, installing, and maintaining library electronic devices, personal computer hardware and software, both for the public and for library employees.
  • Attends continuing education workshops, classes, and conferences.
  • Staffs Circulation Desk as needed.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Competence and experience working with electronic devices.
  • Computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public.
  • Ability to create and maintain effective public relations.
  • Driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • American Library Association-accredited master’s degree in library and information studies.
  • Basic cataloging skills.
  • Spanish language skills.
  • Experience with Innovation (Sierra/Encore).
  • Driver’s license.

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Sierra Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Online catalogs including Overdrive, WorldCat, and WISCAT, among others.
  • General application software – word processing, spreadsheets, databases, publisher applications, presentations.
  • Photocopy machine and scanner.
  • Phone system.

  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing and stooping.
  • Bending/twisting and reaching.
  • Speaking and hearing.
  • Far vision at 20 feet or further, and near vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Lifting, carrying to a maximum of 30 pounds.
  • Pushing, pulling: objects weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels.
  • Mobility to travel to meetings outside library in other communities, including some overnight conferences.
