About the Blog

The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Youth Librarian is a blog for teens. Youth Services Librarian, Ann Hardginski, will share info about great books for teens, cool websites, homework help, and other info related to teen services at the library.

February Tween Scene After School Programs

The Kimberly Library will host four weeks of afterschool programs for tweens and teens in grades 4-8 on Thursdays in February from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Each week will feature hands on activities.

2/6 Angry Birds--create and play Angry Birds Live!

2/13 Valentine's Fun--trivia, silly games, and cookie decorating.

2/20 Duct Tape Project--try a rose, necktie, or lanyard with colorful tape.

2/27 Scrabble Tile Art--make locker magnets using a Scrabble tile and pictures.

We'll also introduce a few new books each week. Bring a friend and enjoy some after school fun!

Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge

Readers in grades 3-10 have a chance to earn a free ticket to the March 16 or April 5 Milwaukee Bucks game through the Read to Achieve challenge. Pick up a packet which contains a reading record, stickers, bookmark, and poster at the library. Read 500 pages and report your reading to the library by February 27 to receive a voucher for a free ticket with the purchase of an adult discounted ticket. Read 750 pages to have your name placed in a drawing for a team autographed basketball.

There are lots of great books waiting for you at the library. Stop by soon and check one out!

Teen Video Contest

2014 marks the second year that Wisconsin will participate in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Teen Video Challenge.  The entry form and model release form are available online at: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_ys-sn

More information about the contest, including promotional resources and video creation resources, can be found at: http://cslpreads.org/challenge-overview.html

For the contest, teens should create a video promoting Summer Reading at the public library, including an interpretation of the 2014 CSLP teen slogan "Spark a Reaction," to win $275 and a $125 award for the library.  Any teen, aged 13 -18, can enter the CSLP 2014 Teen Video Challenge in the state where they reside. Videos can be created individually or as a team. Each participating CSLP member state will select one winner.

The deadline is Friday, February 14, 2014.  The state winner will be selected in March 2014.  The national selections will be announced in April 2014.

Curious about what teens might make?  Take a look at the 2013 winners for inspiration, including the winning submission from the L. E. Phillips Memorial Library in Eau Claire! http://cslpreads.org/programs/young-adult-program/teen-video-challenge/2013-teen-video-winners.html

Divergent Movie

So many great teen books are being made into movies. One of my favorites, Divergent by Veronica Roth, is getting the big screen treatment in March 2014.

October After School Workshops for Tweens and Teens

Tweens and teens in grades 4-8 are invited to our Tween Scene after school programs on Tuesdays in October (except 10/22) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Kimberly. We have a fun line-up of projects and activities ready for you.

October 1: Build-a-Bot

Use a windup toy and Play-doh to create a one-of-a-kind robot, then wind it up and watch it go!

October 8: Game Time...Old School Edition

Compete with your friends in the old school Words with Friends...Scrabble! Not a fan? Just grab a different board game and have fun. We'll have a build-your-own trail mix bar to make the competition even sweeter.

October 15: Painted Book Ends

Personalize your library! Take a book end and paint it any way you like. Try something inspired by a favorite book or hobby. Completed book ends will be used in the kids and YA book display areas.

October 22--no program

October 29: Make a Mummy

Bend, shape, and create your very own wire mummy!

We'll also feature some of the newest and coolest books, so bring your friends and join the fun!
