Contemporary Collage Techniques and Practices

Thursday, October 4, 2018 - 4:00pm to 7:00pm
Kimberly Public Library

Learn the basics principles and practices of collage, presented by September/October's Artist in Residence, Tyla Hilfreich. This walk-in / open house style workshop will focus on simplicity and balance within composition. All ages and skill levels welcome! No fees or registration required. This is open house style, so drop in anytime and stay as long as you'd like between 4 pm and 7 pm.  Invite friends, share collage tips and more in the Facebook event.

We will focus on five physical elements to tell a story. These physical elements include wood, earth, water, fire, and metal. Using these ideas as a foundation for storytelling, we will then begin to add personal elements to make it unique and our own.

The objective of this event is to have the student see and understand space, balance and symbols. Using imagery from multiple sources and combining them to create unique and powerful images intended to be dynamic, peaceful, energizing or anything you can imagine. Being able to talk about our own work, and others, will be a great advantage for all who are present during the class. Learn by doing it yourself, while also learning from others.

Materials like color and ordinary pencils, charcoal, graphite, markers, color tape and collage materials are provided, as are 8x10 or 11x14 pieces of paper and mat board, so please just bring your lovely selves and a friend! We’ll use traditional techniques mixed in with experimental and contemporary, participants are encouraged to go their individual way. Happy accidents usually happen along the way and can be a cause for great revelations. Materials and paper provided but bring your own too if you prefer!
